Small Cell Planning

Small Cells bring much needed capacity to high traffic areas. They enable mobile operators to support data intensive applications for their subscribers. A well-designed Small Cell network will increase throughput per user and provide a superior experience. Moving beyond personal mobile devices, Small Cells have the potential of providing comparable speeds to wireline, making smart cities and other IoT powered applications possible.

Multiple challenges exist in small cell deployments. Infrastructure is closer to sources of interference. Spectrum reuse and fade margins need to be managed. Locations often change, due to complex lease agreements, or zoning issues. Even with these issues, the most significant is determining the demand pattern effectively.

  • Drive test interacts with the network, impacting the performance metrics the test is attempting to measure.
  • Utilizing social media to measure demand, excludes a percentage of the subscriber base.
  • VDT (virtual drive testing) and OSS data do not provide the granularity required.
  • Certain environmental and BTS conditions prohibit mobiles from connecting to the network, therefore pent up demand is not adequately measured.

DGS provides a passive, time-based solution, which:

  • Utilizes fixed and nomadic analysis units.
  • Performs intensive, low touch data collection, creating sub 50-meter granularity
  • Integrates traditional datasets, offering a clearer perspective of site placement near actual traffic.
  • Incorporates more collection points, over longer time periods, to improve accuracy
  • Provides visibility into competitor traffic from an uplink and downlink perspective.

The DGS small cell placement solution assists mobile operators in refining demand patterns, to add additional capacity where it is truly needed.
